Day 12: Whatever tickles your fancy
It's been way. too. hot.  Am covered in sheen of sweat that makes movement difficult. Send help.

Day 11: A photo of me taken recently

I think my cousin Shelly took this picture, in which I am twice the size of the cousin next to me and her baby - who is three months younger than Kaelinn - is twice the size of mine.  I'm wearing a vlogbrothers nerdfighterlike t-shirt and a Rocklove Jewelry/Palimpsest necklace for at least twice the geeky fun.  It was about 98 degrees that day, and thus I am sweaty-shiny.  Also, I really wish I had freckles everywhere instead of just on my arms - I love freckles.  Even mine.  They're one of my best features, in fact, along with my hair (not that you can tell in this picture) and eyes.

Day 7: A photo that makes me happy

Let me explain: while I am very much a mother and my children do, indeed, make me very happy, this is a special picture. This is my youngest daughter (I have three girls, for those of you who don't know), who was born small, lost a lot of weight before leaving the hospital, then weaned herself early and had eating issues. This particular picture makes me so very happy because she's standing without someone holding her up, and yes, she has to hold onto that column thing, but she's doing it on her own. And she's happy about it. So, yeah, this picture makes me ecstatic. She's healthy and well, and though at a year old she's a few months behind on a lot of the physical stuff, she's progressing. These are the things that matter.

Day 8: A photo that makes you angry/sad

I am a daughter of activists, and I am - in my own way - an activist as well. What bothers me about this picture is not the sentiment behind it, but what is being done to demonstrate that sentiment. I can't fully articulate how angry and sad, both, this (and other pictures like it) makes me, or why.

Day 9: A photo I took
(on my Flickr, which I use sporadically at best)

I took this picture, like, four years ago and I think it's one of the ones that got posted in some WWII reenactment magazine.  It was hotter than hell, there was no shade, and the smoke bombs smelled bad, but it was fun to get out there and take pictures.  When I was young, I wanted to be a photojournalist in a bad way, and travel all over the place taking pictures for newspapers and magazines.  This was one of my favorite days EVAR because of that.

Day 10: A photo taken of me over ten years ago

This is actually one of my favorite pictures of me EVAR.  That's my grandma's old Irish Wolfhound and one of my aunts, and I think I'm about five, maybe, in it.  There's a Kermit the Frog pin on my overalls.  It's just a great picture.

And now I'm caught up!  Enjoy the picspam.

Day 6: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
There was a whirlwind trip to Kalamazoo (my hometown) yesterday, during which we had lunch with my mom and her boyfriend (not that it was presented as such, oh no, we're far too high school for that), which was awkward.  I'm not really a terribly social person, I just play one well, so a lot of situations are kind of difficult.  Like, ones where I'm expected to hold conversations.  So anyway, there we were watching my mom play blatant favorites with my kids (which my in-laws do too, so I can hardly say it's unique) and trying to come up with things to say for a couple hours.  At least it was a flyby trip?  Yeah, we'll go with that.

The rest of the day was a family reunion at the park where my wedding reception (and graduation party, and . . .) was held; it was a gorgeous day for it, if awfully hot.  I saw cousins that I haven't seen in person (thank you, facebook, for all the pictures) in years, and a sister that I haven't too.  It was nice to hang out - I took lots of pictures, but not enough.  Most of the ones I ended up with are of one of my cousins (who's a decade older than I am) and her son playing with my youngest.  Oh!  And I got proselytized - some girl wanted me to save my soul by asking for Jesus' help or something.  I was dumb and didn't get it at first - thought she was just asking about churches in town, which I actually know quite a lot about, given that I was Super Youth Group Girl (tm) through junior high and high school.  I laughed a lot about that on the way home.

Day 5: Favorite Quote
Again, there are many.  I read prodigiously, and listen to music (generally with lyrics), and so on.  So!  I'll just put up the first one that comes to me.  It's summer, and hot, so here goes:

"I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass."
~Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself"

Day 4: Favorite Book
This is a lot like the favorite song question, I'm afraid - I read voraciously, and my favorites vary with any number of factors.  There are ones that always top the list, certainly - "The Refugee Summer" by Edward Fenton, "Rosebud With Fangs" by Beverly Keller, "Rose Blanche" by Roberto Innocenti, "Hiroshima No Pika" by Toshi Maruki, "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King, and many others (most of which are children's or young adult books, because I will always be a Toys R Us kid) - but what I like today and what I like tomorrow are not necessarily going to be the same thing.  So!  Of the recent and -ish books I've read, these are my favorites - just a small list, in no particular order.

"Boneshaker" - Cherie Priest
"Palimpsest" - [ profile] yuki_onna (Catherynne M. Valente)
"The Honey Month" - [ profile] tithenai (Amal El-Mohtar)
"The Hunger Games" and "Catching Fire" - Suzanne Collins
"Harry Potter and the *" - JK Rowling

Dating this for yesterday anyway.

Day 3: Favorite Television Program
I have a love/hate relationship with TV.  There are shows I like, of course, but then there's all the bother that goes along with them.

The commercials that are twice as loud, and nearly as long, as the show in question.
The product placement that makes the show itself a commercial.
The insistence on 'perfection' that winds up with everyone looking the same.

That said!  My current favorite show is probably a tossup between Glee!, Castle and Chuck.  I love all three for different reasons (though sometimes I hate on Glee!'s musical choices, and I always hate on the overly liberal use of autotune), and they're ones I'll actually watch without necessarily needing to be reminded they're on.  My ALL TIME FAVORITE show, though, is probably Doctor Who - for the memories attached to it, for having seen all the Doctors, for knowing that the Ecclestone season was in no way season one.  And that's without the geekiness thrown in.

Day Two: Favorite Movie
This is another one where I have quite a few, though I think I have to say the two constants are "Labyrinth" and "Drop Dead Fred".  Both were discovered while babysitting (for two very different families) at around the same time.  The first time I saw "Labyrinth", it was on Beta and had Japanese subtitles, and I still remember trying to read the kanji (that is what it's called, yes?  Might have been one of the two partial versions, or whatever it is?) and, of course, not being able to despite knowing what they were saying.

"Drop Dead Fred" was on the first time I kissed a boy.  It was stupidly hot outside and there were cicadas and he'd been at a basketball game or something and came home before his parents did; he sat next to me.  Watched for a few minutes.  Asked why I was watching "this dumb movie", and kissed me.

And there you have it!  Two movies I'll watch over and over and over again, however much they might irritate my husband or children.

Day 1: Favorite Song

Like most people, when I'm asked this question, I list my favorite song of the moment. I'm quite the audiophile and on my computer alone I have over 130G of music which, even when most of it's 320kbps, is a fairly obscene amount. When I was younger, I used to hold entire conversations in song lyrics, the more obscure and underground the better (and usually the more angsty the better, too). Y'see, I was raised to be a musician. My exposure to anything other than classical, opera, jazz, Broadway and 'world music' (usually Celtic or South American) was pretty minimal until I turned . . . oh, eight or ten or something like that. So this is a more complicated question for me than it should be, I suppose, especially since I can't even pick a genre that's a particular favorite. I can say that I don't like country or rap, but even that's not true - I love Patsy Cline and Elvis, and Will Smith when he was the Fresh Prince still cracks me up.

So, I'm going to break the 'rules'. I do that a lot.  Being a classically trained musician and an audiophile does not at all lend itself to picking one favorite song.

Favorite song to play (flute near-solo): Minuet from L'Arlésienne, Bizet
Favorite song to play with (symphonic) band/orchestra: An American in Paris, George Gershwin
Favorite marching band song: Malagueña (which is not so much a song as a style/genre, sue me)
Overall favorite classical piece:
Adagio in G Minor, Albinoni
Favorite song to sing (ensemble/choir): All Things Bright and Beautiful, John Rutter
Favorite song to sing (solo/classical): Ave Maria, Schubert
Favorite song to sing (solo/karaoke): Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Pat Benetar

There are so many more.  I was going to go into it - favorite songs in a genre and the like, but!  That's way too much.  We'll stick with the mostly classical we have here.
